In 2014, as part of its budgetary governance, the Government decided to establish a Budget Monitoring Committee inspired by the federal model.
The Committee monitors budget implementation on both the expenditure and revenue sides and prepares multiannual budget projections on the basis of which the Government’s work will take place. Its role is therefore to provide a regular, objective picture of the budgetary situation in terms of both expenditure and revenue.
The Government also decided to create a Monitoring Support Unit responsible for providing the Committee’s secretariat and preparing its work.
Initially housed within the SPW Finances (Wallonia Public Service – Finance), the unit was integrated into WFE on 1 January 2024.
Since then, the unit’s members have contributed to WFE’s missions, particularly in budgetary steering.
WFE is the Government’s privileged partner throughout the budget process, from budget preparation to implementation. In particular, the Government calls on WFE in the following areas:
- Opinions on budgetary proposals;
- Opinions on Government decisions having a budgetary impact (both the Walloon budget and public administrative unit) and on the ESA balance;
- Thematic monitoring of specific types of expenditures and revenues (budgetary funds, tax revenue, public service, European co-financing, etc.)
